The Black Diamond Campus once again provided the staging area for the 2nd Annual HERA Ovarian Cancer Climb for Life September 11-14, 2003. Over 140 climbers, volunteers, professional climbers and participants gathered in Salt Lake to raise awareness and dollars for ovarian cancer.
Challenging themselves to climb a certain number of feet in two days, the participants then challenged their families and friends to support them with $$ pledges. Close to $60,000 was raised over this weekend of fun for a good cause. And over 100,000 feet of rock was climbed. (More than the equivalent of 3 Mount Everests.)

Climbers ranged in age from 9 - 58, with a group of high school students traveling more than 750 miles roundtrip to pay tribute to their teacher Sandy Richardson, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer at the age of 43, less than one year after being diagnosed. According to the students from the Yampah High School in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, it was a way they could make a difference.
Well-known climbers, Dave Bell, Katie Brown, Kitty Calhoun, Kim Cszmaszia, Lisa Gnade, Nate Gold, Nancy Feagin, Julie Faure, Stephanie Forte, Anna Keeling, Nancy McCoullough and Chris Sharma joined participants on the rocks and boulders of Little Cottonwood, Big Cottonwood and American Fork. Off the rocks, climbers enjoyed Yoga every morning, a Fiesta Party with salsa instructors, hang-time at a local pub and the world premier of Josh Lowell's new film Pilgrimage.
"It was an amazing weekend that changed my life," Lisa Curly from Chicago said. "I will definitely be back next year." Lisa raised almost $5,000 for the cause.
Close to $10,000 worth of gear was given away to participants raising $500 or more. Top fundraising prizes went to:
1st place: Lisa Curly, Roundtrip airline ticket to anywhere in the US or Canada
2nd place: Akaljeet Khalsa, Arc'teryx pack, Sterling Rope, Montrail D7 approach shoes, Camp Helmet and Thorlo socks
3rd prize: Kathy Nilsen, Northface Treefrog Tent, Big Agnes Sleep Pad and Black Diamond Ion headlamp
