Kim Csizmazia

Kim Csizmazia

Widely regarded as the best female ice climber in the world, Kim Csizmazia has been a successful multi-sport athlete her entire life. Kim grew up in Ketchum, Idaho with the mountains at her fingertips; alpine skiing spilled out her front door; nordic out the back. She went on to become a champion nordic skier, pro mountain biker and the winner of ESPN’s Survival of the Fittest in 1998.

Climbing quickly became Kim's passion and she developed into one of the country’s top women climbers. Ascents of the West Buttress of Denali, Trench Warfare and numerous hard aid lines inYosemite, the Black Canyon and Zion are a testament to Kim’s broad range of skills and her talent for the sport. Kim was introduced to ice climbing at a Jeff Lowe slide show and went on to become a solid WI6 climber undefeated in competition and the first woman to have climbed M10.

Her passion, she says, comes from “an insane motivation to ice climb as much as possible. I live and breathe to climb and ski." Kim shares her expertise and enthusiasm by working as an Exum Mountain Guide and developing women’s clinics through Ascending Women (in Canada) and Chicks with Picks (in the US).

Kim started working with Black Diamond in the retail store, offering advice on climbing gear and sharing her enthusiasm with others. She was a BD employee for several years before moving into her current role as a Technical Rep and "Black Diamond disciple," as she calls it. Over the years Kim has provided valuable feedback by testing gear of all types—ice tools, harnesses, climbing equipment, rock shoes and boots. Still a big fan of the Carbon Fiber Cobra, Kim also uses the Viper for pure water ice. She prefers to climb in the Scarpa Cerro Torre for most conditions and the Scarpa Alpha for cold regions like Alaska. For skiing, her choice is the Scarpa T2, which provides the stability and precision she prefers.
